Imja Tse is usually reached via an offshoot of the Everest Base Camp trail. It is a very popular mountain in an incredible location. Just to the north rise Nuptse (7,879m./25,850 ft.), Lhotse (8,501 m./27,890 ft.), Lhotse Middle Peak (8,410 m./27,590 ft.), and Lhotse Shar (8,383 m./27,503 ft.) To the east above Lhotse Shar Glacier is Cho Polu (6,734 m./22,093 ft.) with Makalu (8,475 m./27,805 ft.) rising behind. To the south is Baruntse (7,720 m./25,328 ft.) and Ama Dablam (6,856 m./22,493 ft.) Climbing the mountain usually begins with a short rock scramble, then a short crossing of the glacier and then a short but steep snow climb to gain the summit ridge. The last moves onto the ridge often prove difficult and many parties leave a fixed rope in place for the descent. The ridge itself is a classic and undulates towards the main summit which is reached via a final tricky snow pitch. |
